Digging dirt, classifying the rocks down to sand, then using a sluice to get just a coffee can of concentrates could take all day – and you may not find a flake. In a group or on your own, the miner’s work is never simple. “Where it’s hard to go is usually the best, and if you do have success, most people keep it quiet,” Rieck says. Getting tips on the best place to find gold is never easy. Keene Engineering has been family-owned since 1955 and touts itself as the world leader in portable mining and prospecting equipment. The GPAA gives its members access to claims around the U.S. Rieck highly recommends that potential prospectors join the GPAA for fun, education and access. The show is one of several across the country sponsored by the Gold Prospectors Association of America. He is preparing for the Gold Show at the Fairplex in Pomona on Feb. Rieck has patents for his mining equipment, along with a couple of claims for gold mining in San Bernardino and Kern counties. The rest of his massive metal shop makes parts for the aerospace and lighting industries and even a 100-foot guitar for the newest Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Sacramento.
